2018 was the year the assault course range doubled, and it never shrank back. There are eight assault courses on the fleet now, running from a 70ft unit that fits a school field to a 220ft bootcamp that needs a small field of its own, and they book solid from Easter through to October. Here is what is on the range, what each one needs for space and power, and where the limits sit.
What's on the range
The 70ft Mega Assault Course is the middle of the range and the one most schools and community groups settle on. Two racers go head to head through the twin entry lanes, past padded pillars, under arches and through an enclosed crawl, up a double-lane climbing wall and down the slide to finish. It takes up to 12 users at a time, dropping to 10 when riders are over 1.5m tall, and it is the most forgiving course on surfaces: it sits happily on grass, grass-and-hardstanding mixes, concrete, tarmac and even wood chip. The 75ft Mega Assault Course steps up to three linked sections in red and black, with crawl entrances, biff-bash bars and netted runs, and it takes 18 users at once, so the queue keeps moving at a busy fete. Also £499 plus VAT.
The two 100ft courses
The 100ft Mega Assault Course in red and black holds 18 racers on a 100-foot run and needs 120ft x 18ft of clear level ground with 14ft of overhead clearance. Its trick for big events is that it links end to end with the 75ft course, which is why the PIPA inspector sometimes measures the pair as one 207ft run, and why the size panel looks odd if you were expecting 100ft. The 100ft Mega Assault Course with Base Jump is the 70ft course with an Extreme Base Jump bolted on the end: the same head-to-head route, then a climb to the top of the base jump tower and a leap into the landing zone, which is the bit people line up twice for. It needs a 12ft wide, 100ft long, 16ft high working area and starts from £799 plus VAT.
The 220ft Bootcamp
The Bootcamp 220ft Mega Assault Course is the largest mobile course we carry. The 220ft is the obstacle route, and because the layout turns back on itself the actual setup area is about 100ft long by 41ft wide with 14ft of clear height, which catches a few people out who read 220ft and picture a straight line. Slides, hurdles, tube squeezes and climb-and-crawl sections sit inside the enclosed red-and-black course, and the 8ft slide platform gives the finish some drama. We built it on the grass at Doncaster Racecourse for a corporate fun day, and it has done scout camps and festivals since. It is grass-only outdoors, so no concrete or wood chip sites, and with a from-price of £1,695 plus VAT it is the one that needs the numbers to justify the space.
What events book them
School fun days and year six leavers parties in Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley book the 70ft and 75ft units more than anything else, corporate family fun days and team-building days take the 100ft pair, and the Bootcamp goes out for the big ones: festivals, county scout camps and the larger corporate jobs, in Doncaster one weekend and Chesterfield or further out the next. Race formats keep the throughput up, because a head-to-head run takes two minutes and the next two racers are already kitted up. Vikki, who hired one for a year six leavers party, put it like this: "The delivery staff were very friendly and the set up was fantastic. We hired the inflatable assault course and the kids loved it."
Space, power and the limits
Every course in the range runs off standard 13 amp sockets, between two and four depending on the unit, and if the site has no mains we can bring a generator. Indoors, the courses work on artificial grass or hard flooring in halls with the height to take them, and the panel on each product page spells out the surface matrix for that exact unit. The real constraint is footprint: the red and black pair want 120ft x 18ft, and the Bootcamp wants 100ft x 41ft of decent access with a vehicle able to get near, so measure the field before you fall in love.
