Last Saturday - the first of August - we took a full setup over to Morends in Doncaster for a community fun day on the playing field. The sort of booking where the van opens and half a field's worth of kit comes out.
The 75ft red and black Mega Assault Course was the biggest thing on the field by some distance, with safety netting roped round it and mats down at the exits. It's a proper run, the 75ft: a climb at one end, a stretch of tunnels and obstacles through the middle, and the big slide out the other side. By the time one lot is through the tunnels, the next is halfway up the climb, which is how a course that size keeps a crowd moving.
Around it we had bouncy castles in a mix of sizes, the mobile climbing wall and a dome, with tents and stalls up along the edge. We run one of the largest selections of mobile climbing walls in the country - they're a mainstay of the gala days and school events we do - and a wall at a community fun day never wants for volunteers. Judging by the state of the grass, it was one of the hotter Saturdays of the summer as well.
All of it is our own kit, out of our 25,000 sq ft warehouse just off the M1 at Rotherham, set up by our own crew. That's how we like community days to work, because when everything belongs to us there's no waiting on a third-party supplier if something needs sorting on the day.
There's a reason fun day committees book the big course rather than three small attractions: a 75ft assault course in the middle of a field does half the advertising for the day on its own. You can see it from the far gate, the kids see it from the car park, and the queue sorts itself out. Everything else on the field then has a crowd to catch the overflow.
Community fun days don't need a theme or a big budget to work. A field, two or three big attractions and good weather does it - and two out of three were in plentiful supply on Saturday.
