People often assume mobile climbing walls only work at the school fete down the road, but ours spend most of the summer on the back of a trailer going all over the country. We own four of them outright - the 26ft mobile wall, the 6.6m Enterprise, an inflatable climbing wall and Spider Mountain - and they go out to events from village greens in South Yorkshire to festival sites and exhibition venues across the UK.
The fleet, briefly
The 26ft mobile climbing wall is the tallest of the four and takes four climbers at once on four routes of different difficulty. The Enterprise stands 6.6m with moulded faces shaped like real rock and a TRUBLUE auto belay on every line, and it's battery powered, so it doesn't need a mains socket or a generator - handy on a field with no power for half a mile. Where we need a bigger activity zone we can attach two bungee trampolines to the rear of a wall and run the lot as one attraction. Each wall runs on auto belay, so climbers just let go when they're done and the system lowers them at a controlled speed - no ropes for your volunteers to manage. The auto belays take anyone from 10kg to 150kg, so children and adults climb the same wall, and Zoe Sheppard, who booked one last year, put it better than we would: "Really well organised with the booking, great setup on the day, got children and adults alike engaged with the climbing wall."
Getting a wall to your event
Access is the thing that decides whether a wall goes where you want it. The trailer needs gates and entrances at least 2.8m wide and 2.8m high, and the wall itself needs standing room of roughly 11.6m by 2.8m when it's erected, on grass or hard standing. Setup takes around 30 minutes once the trailer is on site. Our crew arrives with every harness, helmet and mat, fits each climber, runs the safety briefing and stays for the whole session - we don't drop a wall off and leave anyone to figure out the belays. Throughput sits around 60 climbers an hour, which is why a school with 300 pupils books a full day, not an hour.
Where the walls go
Closer to home they're regulars at school fun days and community events in Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Barnsley, Worksop and Chesterfield - Armthorpe Parish Council and Community Centre had one at their event and told us afterwards: "The service we received was excellent, the climbing wall was a great addition to our event." Further afield they've worked scout camps in Nottinghamshire with around 4,000 people on site, festival weekends on the coast, and corporate fun days for clients including Amazon. The nationwide side is the same operation as the local one: the walls come off our own trailers in our own vehicles, with risk assessments and method statements emailed to you or your venue before the event. We keep a separate site dedicated to the fleet, at mobileclimbingwallforhire.co.uk, if you want the full wall-by-wall detail.
A note on weather, since it comes up: the walls work in rain fine, the climbers less so, and outdoor use is rated up to wind force 5. There's nothing to stop a wet-weather booking, but it's worth having a plan for the queue. If you want one of the four walls for your date, hit the green Get A Quote button on any of the climbing wall pages or call 0114 345 0135, and we'll confirm availability and a delivered price for your postcode.
