Four players each grab a hobby horse, place it between their legs and wait for the starting pistol. Then it's a flat-out gallop, pumping the horse up and down as fast as you can while watching your coloured cut-out horse race along the course in front of you. The faster you gallop, the faster it moves. First past the post wins. Each race lasts under a minute, but it takes more stamina than anyone expects. The game comes with its own built-in commentary, announcing the winning horse at the end of each race before the horses reset to the starting post for the next group.

The Gold Cup is as much fun to watch as it is to play. Four people frantically galloping on hobby horses while watching their cut-out horses inch ahead of each other is genuinely funny, and it always draws a crowd of spectators cheering their favourites on. The quick race format means high throughput too, so queues move fast.

We organised a horse racing theme night in York using the Gold Cup alongside the Home Stretch Horse Racing Game and other games. It's also been used at Old Trafford Football Ground for a sporting-themed corporate party alongside mini golf, Atari Pong, virtual bowling and the Batak Pro. The format works well as after-dinner entertainment or as part of a race night theme.

The unit needs about 8ft x 8ft of floor space and runs off a standard 13A socket. It works indoors on hard floors, or outdoors under a marquee or gazebo. A trained member of DB staff sets up, runs the game and packs down, so you don't need to assign anyone from your team.
